It was the beginnings of summer. The endings of spring. Vacation was just around the corner for this excited young man. 13 and ready for the annual trip to the theme park. Danny was so anticipating this trip. He was going to get to walk with and maybe hold hands with the girl he had be pining for all year in school. Grades dropped. Attention was gone. It was just Danny, a heart, and a girl. Her name was Kayla. She had blue eyes. Nice brown hair. Pale beautiful skin. An all around goregeous girl. This was it. The trip of a lifetime. The chance to spend the time with his first love and maybe get to be the one to leave a good mark on her thoughts.
“I'm going to walk with you all day at King's Paradise Danny.” She said. Danny was so ready. “I'm looking forward to it.” He replied. Yes he was ready so ready to tell her how he felt about her. Danny's buddies had given him the go. “Go for her.” They said. “She's great for you.” It was a feeling so strong that it could not be erased. Time would not weather it away. Water, nor wind could erode it. It was there. Kayla had made a fingerprint in his mind and left it in ruin. What's a 13 year old to do? No where to turn. Nothing else to do. But go for it. Soon the day came and the bus was loading up. Danny sat with his friends. Kayla with hers, staring back at him. Little did Danny know the event that would affect him for a while was coming. Something that would eat at him for a long time.
So on the bus Danny is sitting there in nervous angst. Eager beaver he was. All ready to spend a dream day with the girl of his dreams. Mike, Danny's good friend, lets him hear a band called the Deftones. On the way to the park Danny listens all the way. Enjoying the music and the excitement of getting to be with someone special. The song “Bored” screams over the headphones. While Danny just sits wide-eyed anxious staring out the window, then to Kayla's beautiful hair, then back out the window. The trip seemed to have taken forever. Nothing else was on his mind. Not the physics project he was to do. Not the rides. Nothing. But the rush of getting to be near this person he had built up to be a gift to mankind. Slowly the bus slows down to almost a halt. The children all pull up to the toll booth for the parking lot. The driver pays the toll. Setting in motion the event to kill the thoughts in Danny's mind.
As they all unload from the bus.........Danny walks over to Kayla. He asks her, “Are you ready to have some fun with me.” That's when the cataclysmic reaction took place. It should have been written in the papers. Broadcast on the news. The world should have stopped in that very moment to watch. To watch when everything falls. Kayla replies............ “Is it ok if I go with my friend Casey.” “She really wanted me to walk with her.”........................................Before Danny could get anything else out they walked off. Destroyed pride. The broken teeth of integrity. It rang through him like an earth quake and ruined the rest of his day. He ended up not doing the project. And failing the class. This event created a hollow in his eyes that would stay for years to come. That night he had borrowed the tape his buddy let him hear. Listened to it all night after his parents got done yelling at him for failing. Until his mom sat down with him. And asked..... “You were in love with her weren't you.” He timidly replied back: “Yes I was.”
“I know how it feels son.” Mom gave him a big hug and left him alone to listen to his music. Danny put his earphones on. And turned the volume up. He stared blankly at the ceiling. The thoughts that had been with him before Kayla matched the feelings, and the emotions he had before her. The lyrics spoke to him. “I get bored!!!!!!” Screamed the singer. Danny closes his eyes and repeats to himself........................ “I get bored.”
Where had his first love gone? Rejections smug face smiling down on him. He learned from that day on to fear them. He learned to fear them all. For they would poison him with the pain of rejection and the chagrin of loneliness. They would poison him. And it would make him so bored.
