Yeah!!! That's right folks. I'm back with another round up of deathcore demos for you to gnaw on. Or gnaw at. Once again I'm a metalhead and I love deathcore. There I said it again. Some may say I have a problem. I just say its fun stuff with all of the breakdowney goodness. Did I just invent a word?!! Why yes, yes I did. Here comes the pain.
First up on the list we have Craneotomy. This stuff gives me a craneotomy. I hear more slam death in this stuff than I hear core in the breakdowns. Some would see that as a good thing others a bad thing. This stuff is just a little too by the numbers for me. I gotta say though......Where's the bass guys? The vocals are mixed all the way up front and everything else seems like an afterthought. Did the vocalist get you to do that? Not recommended I think this band has promise but they need to do some maturing.
Next up I have some Force Fed Trauma. This is surprisingly not bad. It has a largeness to it's recording that I'm really liking. That is one thing I like about deathcore. Is at times they record the tri-tone or ahem "brown note" breakdowns like they are standing on top of the balcony in an opera house. Reverberation can be fun. This stuff kind of drips with a menace to it. The ep is called "Stream of Rotting Corpses." So it has to be menacing, right?. Right? I recommend this because there is a lot more promise with room to grow into a really brutal band. The breakdowns are pretty sweet too.
Eat A Helicopter is the next band. I must take a minute to discuss the pure awesome of their name. As opposed to the usual sentence long diatribes that these bands name themselves I must say this is a bit goofy and inventive. Right out of the bag this one has a nice warm sound too it. I'm really enjoying how they don't spend most of their times going full speed ahead. There is a lot more death metal in this than most deathcore bands due to the warm, and dark sound of the guitars. Goddamn these breakdowns are farking heavy. They have some real heft to them. I think these guys might have eaten helicopters for breakfast at one point. Recommended.
Now we have We Speak Texan. Is Texan a language? Sounds like they are speaking growl to me. This stuff has a little bit more toughguy core mixed in with it's death metal. The lead singer reminds me a bit of Vincent from The Acacia Strain. Grahhhhh I hate when few of these bands attempt solos. To me this genre seems like it would be more riff focused when not doing the open E chugs or whatever you call them.(Some where out there guitarists are muttering under their breath at my lack of knowledge.) This reminds me a lot of that what I like to call Ultra-beatdown. The Acacia Strain perfected it and a lot of bands are picking it up now.
Here's a little palate cleanser for you........Squash Bowels' Grind Virus. This is one of the more bad arse grind albums to come out recently. The big ass production of it and them not afraid to be acknowledge the groove. This reeks of old-grindiness and I like that. Wormrot's Abuse is a pretty damn good album too.
So, if anyone is reading this and just thinking that deathcore is a shit genre, well... Remove the corpsepaint and smile once and a while. Buy a red balloon maybe. Or an ice cream cone. Deathcore is fun.
