Ultimate Spider-Man Chocolate Toy Surprise

For the first new article on Review the World 2.0 we're going headhunting for a chocolate web-slinger!  In the box above lies a super heroic somebody cocooned in cacao.  Obviously the first thing I thought about was the beloved NestlĂ© Wonder Ball (if you're unfamiliar click here for a plethora of images via Google).  Those things were great.  Delicious milk chocolate spheres that housed inside, depending on the era, either figurines of Disney characters or SweeTarts-like candies. They were pulled off of the market due to some choking hazard issues but according to Wikipedia the company Frankford "is in the process of bringing them back".

It was hard to discern if this was an officially licensed product as the artwork on the side seemed to depict several different styles the most noticeable being the relatively new Ultimate Spider-Man animated series.  For those that haven't seen it I'd give it a recommendation, doesn't take itself too seriously, and having a sense of humor and capturing the wisecracking Peter Parker we all love.  Occasionally on the show the style will briefly slip into an exaggerated manga/anime homage which births the big, bug-eyed versions of Iron Fist, Nova, and Spider-Man near the bottom of the package.  Opening the box I found my egg-shaped treat resplendent in shiny foil also calling to mind the Wonder Ball.

Unlike the Wonder Ball, however, which you'd break into by whichever means intrigued you most (crack it against the table, bite into it, use a chisel and pretend you're Dr. Alan Grant, etc.) this chocolate spilt into two halves more or less on its own.  The chocolate itself wasn't too impressive, the NestlĂ© Wonder Ball I recall being milky and wonderful, this though was kind of grainy and disappointing.  What was awaiting me inside?

It's adorable anime-inspired Spider-Man!  He stands proud ready to web-sling right into my heart.

Spider-Man: Excuse me gents, know where Jacques' Chili Emporium is?  I'm supposed to be meeting my pal Sonic there for a few chili cheese dogs and to quaff some root beers --

Hulk: That smell...

Duke: No, Hulk, it's nothing.  Let's just go.

Hulk: Chocolate...

Spider-Man: Umm, directions, no?

Hulk: Puny little spider smell like chocolate river in Willy Wonka rubbish flick.

Duke: No, of course he doesn't, Hulk.  Why would he smell like chocolate? Let's just move along, alright pal?

Hulk: Hulk SMASH!!!

B&T Show #11: Dark Knight Soda & Superhero Trading Cards

The Brian & Tim Show is a series I co-star in.  Unlike other videos on RtW I'm merely on-screen talent on this show, all of the shooting, editing, creative decisions, etc. are by Team Sandnut productions founder Adam S.

Superheroes unite in this episode as Brian gives his thoughts on the Batman Dark Knight Soda and then the guys look at some generic superhero trading cards.

Batman Infinity - Episode #2

Batman Infinity was a short-lived series some friends and I created, an alternative universe retelling taking the popular Batman mythos and introducing new perspectives on old stories and characters from the comic book zeitgeist.

In this, the second episode, I think it's fair to say, after a surprisingly well received and fun debut, we had a misfire. The episode, and its video portions here on YouTube, can be broken into its three parts:

Part 1 - One very long take, no cuts, of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and Bruce Banner (Batman) taking a walk together while holding a conversation. Its mostly expository dialogue, Hal reveals his recent journey to outer space visiting the Green Lantern Corps and inheriting his powers, talk of the mysterious Martian Manhanuter who made an auspicious debut in the first episode, and other misc. verbose banter.

Part 2 - My favorite scene in Batman Infinity lore, the interrogation of Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) by Batman. In it, the actors lost it momentarily and laughed, as cameraman, I made a decision not to cut, but to keep filming forcing them to improvise and continue on. After that this portion is focused on Green Lantern finding common criminal Matt Hagen and in their ensuing fight, accidently turning him into monstrous villain Clayface.

Part 3 - Similarly to the too long opening scene, the ending battle is rather lengthy, partly, goofy enough as it is, because we were intent on destroying a piece of furniture in my parents' backyard so we kept drawing out the initial fight as we spontaneously thought of how to destroy it. Then the fight draws towards the back of the yard, where, temporarily knocking both Batman and Green Lantern out of the fight, Clayface dastardly flees the scene.

Batman Infinity - Episode #1

Years ago my buddies and I decided to create our own, alternative version of the famed Batman storyline. In our world, villains could be heroes, and vice-versa, characters from other series' could appear, etc. The show was titled Batman Infinity because imagination is infinite.

In the first episode Scarecrow and Red Skull team up to try and get rid of Batman and his sidekick Green Lantern. There's action including some vicious fight scenes and drama as the heroes try to get to the bottom of Scarecrow's dreaded fear toxin. There's also the first appearance of the mysterious J'onn J'onzz.

Airheads - Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Stranded at home on a “sick day” away from classes I feel it’s my duty to bestow upon the Internet an article heralding Airheads’ latest candy concoction calamity.  Everybody doesn’t’ love Raymond.  Hell, I don’t even know who he is.  But, assuredly, everyone does love them some taffy.  This isn’t the first time Airheads has hooked up with pop-culture, they’ve done it plenty of times beforehand, including devoting entire packages to The Spiderwick Chronicles and Cars, as well as a special taffy flavor dedicated to the film TMNT (which I reviewed here).

This time they’ve really went overboard with the promotions, take a look at the splash page of their official website, it’s been taken over by Batman and his crime-fighting chum.  There’s even activities you can do, and trust me, I did.

I would have had this article finished hours ago had I decided to not spend time working on each and every excruciating detail of my masterpiece—a new version of Green Arrow, he’s African American, rocks some sort of airbrushed attire, and judging by the puddle underneath his feet isn’t quite confident enough yet for being a hero.  There’s also some inconspicuous building in the background with the initials “RTW” on the side of it.  I wonder what that’s all about.  There’s also a personality quiz you can take which determines which of six characters you’re most alike.

First up is Blue Beetle and wouldn’t you know it he gets Blue Raspberry as his personal flavor.  This fits, no qualms, not to mention it’s arguably the best flavor in the entire history of taffy.  Its reminiscent to me of a blue raspberry Slush Puppie which was my favorite flavor to drink as a child as I rode along peacefully in the shopping cart while my mom got groceries.

Green Arrow gets Green Apple, which also works splendidly.  I’m usually not a big fan of sour flavors, which undoubtedly in candy aisles green apple always is, but since I made a mockery of his likeliness above I promised to eat this entire tuft of tart taffy.

Red Tornado I remember fondly from childhood as kind of an unsung hero in our toy collection.  I could never really attribute his awesomeness to anything particularly but he, along with other oddballs like Dr. Fate, had a special place in my gang of good guys.  He gets Cherry, and while I know its dreadfully clichĂ© as a flavor, you can’t really argue against it as in terms of pure taste most would concur it’s the best of the batch.

Things starting getting odd right about… now.  Watermelon for Plastic Man?  Really?  Really?  Those with a keen eye (and good memory) will know that this isn’t the first time this particular flavor has reared its brilliantly hued color on this very website.  Years ago I reviewed Watermelon, in an article that actually predated the dot.com days of RtW, but appeared here in January of ’05.  I likened it to a dolphin phallus for those keeping record at home.  I was not above childish barbs back then in the comedy landscape of 2004.  I don’t see the connection to Plastic Man whatsoever.  In fact, with it’s sea algae-like color, I really believe it would have been a better fit for our next superhero…

Aquaman!  He’s the brunt of many a brutal joke in fan circles but I’ve got to admit his was the flavor I was most looking forward to tasting.  I’ve been a fan of tangerines since my childhood.  Every Christmas my grandmother (amongst other things) would give us a giant cornucopia of fruit to bring back home with us.  It’s then I developed my fascination and adoration for the fruit.  I’ve got to say Airheads did a pretty good job, its not as much fun as eating the real thing, but a decent slap bracelet-sized facsimile.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is Batman with Grape.  This is another rare, or not everyday, flavor of Airheads taffy.  Its quite dark, which is suitable for the Dark Knight, and upon scratching my head in lieu of actually thinking hard about it I can’t come up with a better flavor in substitution.

Of course, per usual, my cat Tomo wanted to get involved with the proceedings.  I offered her a lick of my monstrous amalgam taffy.  She declined, and after leaving the room for a few minutes, returned only to find my cherished tangerine taffy now had a sizeable amount of cat hair stuck to it.

Vader
I thought there was supposed to be tangerine taffy?

Brian
About that…

Vader
Oh, you think its funny?  You think you’re an everyday Deon the Distasteful, eh?

Brian
What?  No!  I don’t even like Deon…

Vader
It’s Vader time!

Super Hero Valentine's Day Cards

Valentine’s Day is here again!  Get out the roses, chocolates, and lubricant!  Is it a romantic holiday, or, something more nefarious?  Could it be an ingenious marketing ploy by the card companies like Hallmark?  Who knows, or really cares, because if you’re like me, it’s an excellent excuse to get out of the house with a loved one, go out to a fancy dinner, and remind ourselves that love and humor are two things that make us uniquely human and should be celebrated.  What do superheroes have to do with Valentine’s?  Well, besides most heroes having significant others in the comics, not a lot, but when it comes down to children’s Valentine’s cards there’s not a lot of other, more accurate, choices for boys.

So, with that said, we’re going to take a look at some of what I found to be the oddest of the odd.  I have found memories of elementary school, I’d like to think I was relatively popular with the young ladies, and received a rather large pile of cards on my desk.  I wonder if anyone will be receiving these heroic cards on the special day?

Iron Man burst into theaters last year, making huge box office dollars, and blowing peoples’ minds.  Due to that movie’s overwhelming success, Iron Man merchandise isn’t too hard to find, so it’s no surprise he’d make his Valentine’s debut this year.  On the left card we’re told to have a “heavy metal” V-Day (which I’ll now be lovingly referring to it as).  Really?  Headbanging hyjinks aside, I never really thought metal and pink flowers went together, but even Slayer fans fall in love!  To the right, a “high-flying” V-Day is wished for us, the first of many cards we’ll see in this article that I find to subtly imply drug-use on V-Day.

“Target: Engaged!”  Seriously?  Holy shit!  I’m just trying to take this girl out for salad, steak, and sodomy, dude!  I’m not looking to get my torso blown into bits.  Is this a threatening V-Day card, or what?

So, when they say, “Armor Up!” are they saying, “Wear a condom!”?  And lastly, is Valentine’s Day supposed to be “thrilling”?  Sure, maybe the heart might beat a bit faster, as you lean forward for a special kiss, but when I think thrilling I’m imaging car chases, explosions, and pirates and cowboys playing Checkers with hand grenades.

My V-Day cards came with a poster and stickers!  Thanks Tony Stark, you damn drunk!

So, remember what I said above about these cards hinting at carefree drug-use?  I rest my case.

“Your secrets are safe!”  Notice the exclamation point?  Who’d be the recipient of one of those bad boys?  I’d be kind of freaked out, personally.  And then, “harness the power”, which befuddles me.  Really, I’m drawing a blank on this one’s relevance to anybody without super powers of their own.

This was an extra big V-Day card, and, I decorated it appropriately with a sticker-covered crotch.

The Superman cards came with tons of temporary tattoos.  Well, I suppose the iconic logo gets permanently tattooed on plenty of hapless halfwits, but at least give us the original, not the bastardized movie version.

The Incredible Hulk is known for his anger issues, but wow, his V-Day cards are just criminally un-romantic.  You hope “it’s a blast”?  You mean, like the one Bruce Banner was involved in, that soaked him in gamma radiation, thus turning him into a green psychopath with the most complicated life imaginable?  No thanks!  “Feel your pulse rising!” ladies!  Or, don’t, because if you get one of these it’s likely to be met with a lukewarm reaction like a biopic on Notorious B.I.G.

I don’t think any females want their male counterparts to have “raging” good times on V-Day; that’d likely entail police violations, unabashed lawlessness, and utter anarchy.  Check please!  “Hulk out!”  This is a joke, right?  I sure hope so, because I just picked myself up from the floor where I writhed in a fit of laughter at the mere thought of that being a suitable V-Day card for anyone not locked in a psychiatric ward.

I think getting and/or receiving a “Have an incredible smash!” card is a precursor to future spousal abuse.  And lastly, “Paint the town green!”  I’m not sure what this implies.  So, I guess we’ll take it literally, and do the following to our families and friends:

Sorry, Joshua, the V-Day card Cindy gave me told me to do it!

Well, as I write this, my wife is working an overnight shift, so I’ve prepared her a V-Day surprise in her absence.  Behold a kitchen cabinet pre-Valentine’s magic—now open the door slowly…

Look out!  Yes, Hulk will be jumping into our faces whenever we need a glass or bowl for now on.  Or, until my wife tears down this crudely produced novelty poster and tosses it in the garbage.

Samurai Slash Batman & Dark Knight Reese's Pieces

Well, unless you’ve been living under or in a rock (and an aside, if so, how are the stalagmites this time of year?) you’ve no doubt heard about the overwhelming financial success The Dark Knight has been at theatres worldwide. Yes, Batman isn’t just for comic fans these days, there’s an insatiable demand for him and it has spilled into all facets of merchandizing. Today I’m going to look at a Batman action figure I got pre-Hollywood hoopla, as well as a new candy offering seeking to capitalize on some of that new mainstream fervor.

The biggest common complaint about Batman toys, and its been going on for some time now, is that they’re some of the most generic offerings in toy aisles.  The usual argument is they’ve basically done the same toy, just added some different features, colors, and extras and repeated this formula add nauseam.  I was on this bandwagon too, until I stopped to think about it, and came to the conclusion there’s really only so many toys you could concoct of the caped crusader before you’d start re-treading the same thing over and over again.  Thus, I opened up my mind when strolling the toy aisle, and for once wasn’t aghast when I saw Batman donning a parka for a tundra trek, or some camouflage for a journey to the jungle.

I finally narrowed it down to a few, ultimately getting the toy above, from the Shadow Tek line, which sounds innocuous enough, Samurai Slash Batman!  Yes, Batman Begins gave us a taste of Bruce Wayne’s martial arts training, but little did we know that he dons this elaborate royal blue gear, attaches saw-shaped blades to his back that shoot like projectiles, and carries a translucent blue sword that’s bigger than his entire upper torso.

Here’s an iconic view of Batman, although he’s usually glaring at the cityscape below from a tall building in Gotham, here he’s just admiring the view from the top of my refrigerator.  Imagine that really creepy, raspy voice Christian Bale used in The Dark Knight saying, “Can I get one of those frozen burritos, dude?”

Here’s our samurai-slashing hero in all his glory!  While I think it’s a little much, especially for someone so stealth and such, I can’t help but get a kick out of it in all its over-the-top awfulness.

See Batman firing his projectiles!  Watch your eyes!

Overall Grade: B

Lastly today, I’m going to talk about a piece of proper The Dark Night movie tie-in merchandise.  Usually when I put Reese’s Pieces and movies together I’m thinking E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and the adorable alien’s penchant for the tiny, peanut butter candy-coated gems.  But nope, we’ve got Batman, and judging by his expression on the front of the bag he’s rather pissed that you’re not buying stock in Wayne Enterprises instead.

Check these out!  Well, it’s not like they went overboard trying to be creative, but hell, beggars can’t be choosers (unless it’s which dumpster to pick up dinner at) so I’m going to hold my tongue and just nod approvingly.  I guess dark blue and black candies in homage to Batman are about a good as a junk food snack as one could possibly desire.

Mega Bloks Spider-Man & Friends Training Camp

One of my favorite things about doing this site over the years is the joy that comes when I randomly stumble upon something I deem worthy of review.  Usually when I go out to dollar stores I’m actually aiming on stocking up on cheap crap to write about.  However, sometimes I’ll be out and about, completely oblivious and contentedly so, and end up finding the coolest stuff.  Take the item you see up above, after visiting Kenwood Mall in the Montgomery district of Cincinnati, I decided I’d take the “back way” home, diverting and meandering through random towns, side streets, etc.  Along the way we saw an interesting strip mall in a town I’d only ever passed through a couple times, Deer Park, OH.  I checked out the pet store, not enough exotics for my tastes, of course I stopped in for a visit at their dollar store, definitely didn’t leave empty-handed, but my real treasure awaited me at… T.J. Maxx?  My wife wanted to stop in for some random reason, and if you haven’t ever been in one of these stores, I don’t know if I can really set the scene for you; they specialize in ladies’ clothing, jewelry, handbags, etc.  However, in the corner of their stores is usually a toy aisle, not an extravagant one, but at least something for me to kill my time at.  So, on this particular impromptu visit, that’s where I found the gem above, and here’s the real bonus, it was marked down for the low price of $3!

There’s been a new trend of “cute” toys based upon popular pop culture characters, ranging from comic book and movie heroes, everyone from Colossus to Luke Skywalker now have their own little, adorable, rubber counterpart.  One of the first lines to successfully capitalize on this fad was Spider-Man & Friends, creating child-friendly versions of popular preexisting characters like Captain America and Spider-Girl.

Above is the back of the box, showing both all the individual pieces you’ll get, plus a rough diagram of the playset.

Here are most of the pieces scattered about after I dumped them on my patio.  They’re bright and bulky, and frankly, I couldn’t wait to start building.  I don’t have a lot of prior experience with Mega Bloks.  I’m aware they’ve been embittered in lawsuit hell against LEGO for quite some time now.  Now, say what you will, and I’m certainly a LEGO fan myself, but Mega Bloks do have some awesome license agreements with properties like TMNT, Gundam, Harley-Davidson, and The Walt Disney Company.

Now, before we start building, and there were no proper instructions included mind you, let me first take a moment to introduce you to our pals for the remainder of this article:

Thor: Thanketh for thee opportunity thine Lord of thine Spiders.  It will be a privilege to workith on my skills at your new “Training Camp.”

Spider-Man: Umm, yeah, about that… don’t mention it.  Reed Richards was too busy tinkering in his lab on some new particle generator stabilizer or decoding an alien language to accept my invite.  So, knock yourself out helmet hair.

Here’s my crudely constructed Training Camp based off the visual on the back of the back.  Admittedly, mine wasn’t quite up to par, the platform leaned to left and I must have not been pushing in my pieces hard enough as they’d easily fall apart upon touch.  Still, I think it looks pretty cool, I was a sucker for playsets as a kid, and albeit simple, even this one has some neat playability options.  The rock climbing wall, spider web trampoline, and zip glider are all irredeemably awesome.

Here’s a shot showcasing the toys being used as they’re intended to, and that’s simply to have fun with!   I think it’s a great little set, and especially a value at the sales markdown price I scored it at.  I plan on dropping it off for my nephew the next time I visit my brother.  Although, I wonder if it’s weak construction will hold up and withstand the punishment of a reckless toddler?  It might actually be a good idea to permanently glue your pieces in the formation of your choosing, as I had trouble getting my edifice to stay together.

Thor: Woohoo!  Now this is fun!  The only thing I can think of I’d rather be doing would be hitting your girl Mary Jane with my mighty hammer… and I’m not talking about Mjolnir!

Spider-Man: “Oh, look at me, I’m Thor, a God of Asgard and big jerk.  I’ve been fighting Loki for 50 years and still haven’t gotten the job done.  I’ve got wings on my stupid helmet because I’m a big dummy.”

Watch the video above to see the thrilling conclusion of a day at Training Camp with Thor and Spider-Man.
